Just because you’ve upgraded your operating system to Windows 7 or Windows 8 doesn’t necessarily mean that you have the most up-to-date drivers on your computer. Changing from a DVI-I cable with DVI/DisplayPort adapter cable to a single-cable DVI-I/HDMI cable has fixed this for me. The machine locked up at least once a day, often recovering with the message that the graphics driver had crashed, but in other cases completely freezing, from remote desktop too.
