I also followed your suggestion and reconfigured the log on user for the security center service. I combined the solutions that you provided me with. I have run full scans with VIPRE, Microsoft Security Essentials, and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, with no positives. my internet service provider gave me a free antivirus which i stupidly wanted to try and installed it.
- I start the service and after about a minute it disables.
- I click on the message and the red "x" goes away.
- If the problem persists, download and run the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool.
- I get the flag in the bottom right hand corner, but when I try to activate it, Action Center reports;"The Windows Security Center service can't be started." I can restart it
- Hope it helps.
- Quite often, perhaps daily, in the system tray I see the flag with a red "x".
- And Voilla..
