I keep hitting dead ends. The problem was that I was confusing the certificates. However, Windows Vista users will have a degraded experience if you don't use SHA-1. I have distributed signed drivers with DefaultInstall sections to our customers since November 2012 and the DefaultInstall section has caused no problems.
